First let me say - I am a parent, too. My children have homework nightly. Sometimes it's crazy - the dog is barking, I'm trying to cook supper, and we've got to get to some practice or event. There are going to be days that an ideal homework setting isn't possible. I live in the real world, too! These are things I've learned as a parent and teacher that help make homework time go as smoothly as possible. If you stick to these tips as much as possible, it will make things easier. 1. Create a "homework spot." This can be a place anywhere in the home where your child will complete homework assignments. Make sure it is a quiet, well lit area without distractions (TV, siblings, etc.). 2. Keep a supply kit handy. Keeping a supply kit on hand prevents having to run out at the last minute. All of these things don't have to be purchased at once, just try to collect them here and there. These supplies are not required, but will help make homework an easier time. (I keep a plastic cart with homework and art supplies near our table.)
tip - Book stores can be expensive. I have built a HUGE library from shopping garage sales, the Habitat store, and Goodwill (you can also probably find a Children's Dictionary and Thesaurus). I usually pay 5-50 cents per book. Shop around! 3. Create and stick to a routine. Children perform better when they know what to expect. Routines are essential. Some parents believe that a child should have some down time when coming home from school. Personally, I have tried it both ways with my own children. Find whatever works best for your family, establish a routine, and be consistent. Set a homework time and stick to it! Don't forget to check and sign your child's agenda as soon as homework time begins. 4. Encourage your child to work independently. Homework encourages students to be responsible. Through homework, they are developing independence and work habits they will use throughout the rest of their lives. There are going to be times that your child may need help. Helping is fine! However, the homework assignment are to be completed by the students. If your child has a very difficult time, encourage them to do their best and be sure to send me a note. 5. Praise your child for a job well done! We all love to hear "good job" every now and then. If your child has been responsible, worked neatly, tried their personal best, etc., let them know you are proud of them. What do I do if my child can't figure something out? Remember - helping is fine! Try to explain the process or the question in depth - without giving them the answer. If your child has a particularly hard time on a certain problem, question, etc., please place a star next to it on the page so it can be reviewed in class. Do you have something that works well at home? Please e-mail me, I'd love to hear about it! |
